Our Process

Fill out a 2-minute survey about the position level. Tell us if you're looking for a senior or a junior developer. Should they know how to use GraphQL or REST?

We prepare a coding challenge based on your survey response, catered to test the expected level of proficiency for the position. The coding challenge may be from our internal library of challenges with some modifications or completely brand new.

Your candidate is invited to complete the challenge. We provide the instructions and administer the test using GitHub and our platform. You will receive email notifications at every milestone.

Once completed, our senior Ruby on Rails developer team analyzes the candidate's workflow and coding proficiency and performance. We remark on both positives and negatives.

We compile a report of our findings and forward this report to you in a PDF format. You will receive this report in 72 hours or less from when the candidate has completed the challenge.

- What happens after I purchase?
- You will fill our a quick questionnaire detailing what specific skillsets you're looking for in your Ruby on Rails developer. We will use this information to cater the code challenge for your candidate.
- How long is the code challenge?
- Our standard code challenge should take about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the proficiency of the developer. We do not set or enforce a time limit as this is not practical for take-home evaluations. There is no strict time limit enforcement. However, our system does log start and stop times.
- What are the code challenges like?

We design code challenges to test important technical, experiential, and idiomatic knowledge of the Ruby language. To this end, our challenges are not Rails-specific, but involve the usage and application of patterns found in Rails applications.
For junior developer positions, the challenge may entail creating a simple class to parse an external file. For challenges targeting senior developer positions, the challenge may be to design an API wrapper for an external service with provisions for handling several known and unknown error types.
- When will I get my PDF report with the analysis?
- Once a candidate has completed the challenge, we will analyze and send the custom PDF report to you within 3 business days.
- Does your coding challenge cover other languages (eg. JavaScript) or other frameworks (React)?
- At the present moment, we only offer Ruby-specific coding challenges.
- Do you interview the candidate?
- We do not interview the candidate. Our process is to assess their technical proficiency through the evaluation in their ability to complete the coding challenge.
- When should the coding challenge take place?
- The coding challenge does not replace your hiring process. Typically, companies will want to verify candidates' technical proficiency after they have passed interviews assessing their behavioural/personality fit. In other words, the use of the coding challenge should be one of the last steps.
- What if the candidate does not complete the test?

If a candidate abandons the challenge, the designed test is considered to be tainted. You can be refunded, minus a 30% fee to cover the cost of the test and card payment processing fees.
Our system keeps track of whether the test has been accessed. Should a candidate not access the challenge altogether, then you can be refunded minus a 5% fee to cover only the credit card processing fees.
You can also opt to retain a credit for future use, in which case there is no deduction.
